I finished up all my technique tags for Tim Holtz CC103 online class about a week after the class was over. I believe you can still buy the class (which once you buy it you have it forever), you just can't post pics or questions to the forum. I had lots of fun and learned a lot as well as revisited a few familiar techniques. These are a 'few' of my favorites.  There is a lot to scroll through. Hope you likey!

Wow! Two posts in one day! In between puttering around the house on my day off from work I managed to get my tag pages done for Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of 2015 monthly challenge.  I didn't have everything he used, and I had to make pages to compliment the tag but I had some pretty good substitutes. For the tag background I do have the Flourish stencil but I chose to use the Festive stencil instead as it compliments the paper I chose to back my tag (it is removable) much better. I did buy the punches ( I had one and bought the other two for this project). I really like them, they punch really well and I figured I would get a lot of use out of them. The Pine and Juniper ones would make awesome sea coral don't you think?

Well the house is still on the market.  Feels like it's been forever but it's actually only been 3 months.  The housing market in CT has been slower to recover than the rest of the country (but it was also the last to collapse when the housing bubble burst) so 3-6 months to sell a house, even in a desirable town is not unusual. It does mean that instead of packing, moving & unpacking/settling in I have some time to get creative in the studio. Woohoo!

I love combining the unexpected and that is what Tim Holtz has done this month. A man after my own artsy fartsy heart! Grungy distress with Gold foiling?! Oh boy! I didn't want to cover up the edges of the tag to much (OK, not at all!) so I used tiny brass hinges and mini brads to attach the tag to the page.

I used the Tag & Bookplates die to cut a tag out of the cork to back the tag for a clean and finished look. For the page on the right I masked off the word 'Blessings" from the background stamp before inking it with Water Can Archival Ink and die cut the word out of the cork 'paper' and placed it where the stamped word would have been.  I finished off that page with two File Tabs with the number 26 - the date of this year's Thanksgiving.

I did find using a rub-on tool to be a bit tedious (I can be a bit impatient - LOL!) to emboss the Pumpkin as the tip was just to small so I dug out my Teflon tip embossing tools from 10 Second Studio to make quick work of popping out the Pumpkin. Thank goodness I didn't pack them when I was decluttering my studio!

Well, one good thing about having my house up for sale (and no more major house projects) is that now I have more art time and have been able to keep up with Tim Holtz's monthly challenges!  I don't have any of his dimensional dies, although I did just get the new Hocus Pocus die with the cool cat.  You know me! I can't resist kitties! So I used that die with a his techniques for this month, then kinda did my own thing. I also had some fun with his new dripping embossing folder. A great die for Halloween (blood) but also for winter/holidays (ice).

I wanted to make the cat creepier so I cut out his eyes, added a tiny sliver of black paper in the centers and backed with red cardstock. Then I filled in with a bit of Glossy Accents. Creepy huh? I embossed red cardstock with the new embossing folder and fussy cut it out. Next I coated the whole thing with Glossy Accents so that it looks like wet, dripping blood - more creepy goodness! I couldn't resist wrapping the cat's tail around the drips for a little Catitude.

Woohoo! I got in a bit more art time so I was able to finish my tag page spread for Tim Holtz's 12 Tag challenge a bit early.  Thought I'd take a little break from prepping for the open house tomorrow to post my results. I love the technique he used this month. It looks embossed but it's not - so cool! I'll definitely be using this technique again!

12 Tags of 2015 ~ July AND August

Phew! All caught up now!  My main focus in July was to finish up all those last minute projects to get the house ready for the market on July 31st.  Just one or two minor things left to do that I cant do but the EX can so I decided to take advantage of some free time to get caught up in my 12 Tags Challenges from Tim Holtz.  I've been doing his challenges for 3+ years now and have never missed a month until now.  But we're all good now so let me show you what I have done this weekend.

First, July:

I pretty much did everything that Tim did except I made pages and I used a brass star blank charm and applied rub-ons to it.  Oh, and I made my tag a fold-out using Washi Tape for a hinge.  I love that the Distress Glaze (I have the Microglaze from Judikins which is the exact same thing) acts as a sealer and a resist!

On to August:

Love the technique for August! Gotta love those layers!  For this month while the technique is the same most all of my elements are different.  Found the quote - which I love and went from there. Plus I think the couple is so cute! They reminded me of my grandparents somehow.

12 Tags of 2015 ~ June

I wasn't sure I would get this months tag/page spread done this month. I've been so busy painting walls, trim & doors, repairing trim, coordinating with contractors to replace the roof, fix the front steps and replace carpet I was just to pooped at the end of the day to even think about doing anything creative. But I finished painting early, the steps got fixed and the carpet all went in without a hitch. Only the roof is left to do and that will happen in a week or two (depending on the weather). So the house is on target to hit the market at the end of July - Woohoo!

I decided to celebrate with a day devoted to creative pursuits and got to work on the June spread for Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of 2015.  I'm not all that crazy about plaid but I gotta say his technique to create custom plaid backgrounds with reinkers, Custom Ink Pads and stencils is just FABULOUS! I'll definitely be putting this technique to good use in the future. 

I didn't have the die that he used so I just did my own thing and went with a Paris theme. Big surprise - right?!  The pages are his new corrugated kraft which I spritzed with Perfect Pearls Biscotti to give it a bit of glam.

I die cut and embossed the Eiffel Tower and Fleur de Lis  from Specialty Stamping Paper then sprayed them with Pumice Stone Distress Spray Stain, quickly heat setting so I wouldn't loose the embossing detail.  This caused a rather cool and unexpected reaction. They ended up looking like patina'd metal! I finished them by lightly swiping over the tops with Black Soot Distress Ink to bring up the embossed details.

To make the leaves I colored a piece of Manila card stock with Distress Stains and spritzed with Biscotti (my FAV Perfect Pearls mist!). I dried it well with my heat gun and then die cut the leaves.  Much easier to color your surface before die cutting than after. Thank you Tammy Tutterow for that tip!

Phew! Nothing like getting in JUST under the wire!  Loved the tag that Tim Holtz did this month.  It included so many things I love. Flowers, old buttons and a touch of stitching. 

When I saw his tag I immediately knew that I wanted to use an old family photo.  I had used it in the past in my art but gave those pieces to family members and I wanted to include it in a piece just for me.  The photo I chose is of my grandparents (maternal) in a passionate kiss. I think it was shortly after grampy proposed, but not entirely sure.  They loved each other unwaveringly their entire lives and this pic certainly illustrates that.  The quote I chose is also perfect for the pic.  They worked hard throughout their lives (and played almost as hard!) to have a great family with a wonderful legacy and lots of great memories.  My grandmother was a nurse and my grandfather started a promising career as a Rosarian for Johnson's Roses then when WWII started he shifted careers to build ships for the war effort and became a Welder which he did the rest of his working life - some shift, huh?! 

I pretty much followed Tim's instructions except for the flowers. I don't have that die set so I used a variety of Prima flowers instead.  I also used more of the same elements for my pages to support the tag and a couple of his script word dies to complete the facing page.  Before I had the Precision Base Plate I had a really hard time getting these highly detailed dies to cut properly.  With the PBP they now cut like a dream!  If you have similar issues cutting highly detailed dies I STRONGLY recommend this plate. It will make your life SOOOO much easier!

Wendy's Make Art Challenge ~ May

Phew!  I'm still recovering from the weekend.  My 1st moving sale was successful beyond my wildest dreams!  Thank you SOOO much to all my friends who helped a girl out providing crowd control & answering questions and to everyone who came out and bought my stuff!  I'll be doing a Sunday one day sale at either the end of June or July.  I'll keep you posted! An update to the Rolltop Desk/Drafting Table saga; the desk sold but the table is still available if any of my local peeps are interested?

OK, back to art!  I actually finished my tag last week for Wendy's May Challenge (which was to use flowers) but wasn't able to post it until now.  This was easy peesy for me as I use flowers a lot in my pieces.

As you can see I chose bright, splashy colors this month. I'm just so ready for summer to get here I guess! I started by covering a shortened #8 manila tag with Tim Holtz Tissue Wrap, creating wrinkles for texture and set that aside to dry.  Next I used Glue & Seal to apply tissue wrap to one side of Wendy's Clearly For Art (a moldable plastic film - LOVE this stuff!) and once it was dry I die cut the flowers (T.H. Mini Tattered Flowers) then painted the tissue side with Distress paints. Then I gently heated the film to form the 3-D flowers.  I used glittery embossing powder to change the color of the brads for the flower centers.

Once the tag was dry I trimmed off the excess tissue wrap and went to town with distress paints and water.  When the paint dried I sanded/scuffed the edges and the wrinkles and colored it further with Distress Inks.  I used one of Wendy's flower stencils with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink for a little more interest on the background. I attached the flowers to the tag with the brads.

For the word band I applied Picket Fence Distress Paint thickly and let it partially dry (I used a heat gun to speed the process. If you do that BE CAREFUL the metal gets VERY hot!). After a couple minutes wipe off the excess paint with a soft cloth.  I attached it to the tag with foam tape and finished it with white twine and a couple Tiny Attacher staples.

That's it for now!  I'm having fun participating in the challenges even if it is a challenge to find time to do them.  With all the decluttering, packing and deep cleaning my house to get it ready to sell these challenges (Wendy's and Tim's) have kind of become my therapy, helping to keep me centered so I don't lose my mind!

Wendy's Make Art Challenge ~ April

One more challenge down on my play day today!  My tag for Wendy Vecchi's Make Art Challenge was completed in about an hour which is so unusual for me!  Typically I try all sorts of stamps, colors and ideas before deciding on the final version, but with this tag everything just came together and worked for me right off the bat.

This months challenge is to use Archival reinkers, which I used to create the background.  A couple drops of color, mixed with Isopropyl Alcohol then I swiped a manilla tag through the mixture until I was happy with the colors and coverage.

Next, using Archival Ink pads I stamped the images, masking off the ruffle border before stamping the tree.  I edged the tag with Distress Ink, because I just can't leave an edge uninked - I just can't!  Next, I dug out some hand painted paper from my scrap stash and punched the tiniest, cutest flowers and an eyelet style border for the bottom of the tag.  I finished the flowers with a yellow Liquid Pearls and added some bling to the border at the bottom.
