It's been quite awhile since I have posted to this blog. Last post was in March! It's been a crazy few months (in good and not so good ways), but I was creating throughout. I've been tending to post more and more to Instagram so if you want to see what I've been making (both in the studio and in the kitchen) in a more timely fashion you can follow me on Instagram. I'm Back!

Wow! I haven't posted since mid-May. SO much has happened since then! From my trip to France and Spain in May/June, selling my house, buying my condo and moving in July. Decorating and setting up my new place - which I absolutely LOVE! In between I have barely had time to work on Art swaps and round robins, never mind just create for the fun of it - but that's OK! I'm getting back in the groove. What better time to start that than now, since it's too dark to do anything outside after work, I can start playing inside instead. Eventually I'll put together my travel journal from my trip. It's a good thing I took notes! It's gonna be at least 6 months after I'm back before I can work on it. That will be a series of posts later - WAY to much to do all in one post. It was a two week trip of a lifetime with my mom and two cousins, starting in Paris and concluding in Barcelona. Stay tuned!

I thought I would share my two most recent art projects; a tiny house swap and an art journal round robin - both local groups.

For the tiny house swap we used the Sizzix/ Tim Holtz Tiny House die which has two different sized houses. It was a 5 for 5 swap but i went a teensy bit crazy and made 12! You'll be seeing more of these all next year as everyone had so much fun creating them that they decided they want to do tiny houses for all the swaps in 2018. These are all Christmas/Winter themed. I made 6 of each size using the kit for all of the images, some of the embellishments and raided my stash for the rest. The next set for the January swap will be strictly Winter.

Next up are images from my pages for my book. This is an art journal round robin. Every player has a theme for their book, plus any requirements. My theme is Holidays and Seasons. Each player picks a holiday and/or season for the time frame they have my book. For instance I prepared my book and created my pages in September & October so I went with a Fall/Halloween theme. Lots of Tim Holtz dies and stamps here! I got the new woodcut owl die for this project. LOVE this die! It's SO incredibly detailed! I cut out 3 of them, stacked them so it was nice and thick then coated it with my own custom heat embossing powder mix. Love how it came out!

Well that's it for now! I'll upload the next set of pages on Tuesday. I got to work in Linda's book which was quite a challenge because of what I felt I couldn't do. I'll explain on Tuesday.

Christmas Crafting Fun!

I created a Christmas themed assemblage box - the first piece of art I have created in a LONG TIME that wasn't for a swap or a deadline. I made it just because! I was inspired by a similar assemblage from Shelly Hickox. If you have never visited her blog - go! And be inspired!

I created the structure itself using a couple Sizzix dies; a candy box die and a cube die. I created the roof piece with a lot of measuring and a little ingenuity. I used mostly Tim Holtz papers and Ideology elements. The bronze trim is antique (the real deal from the late 1800's) and is real metal. The look is unlike anything produced today. Love this stuff and I hoard it when I can afford to buy it (it's kind of pricey!).

For the snow scenes I used a product called Glitter Snow and coated it with chunky, white mica snow when it was still wet. I also used it on the die cut trees and the bottle brush trees.

The drawer pull labels are rub-ons applied to scrap black paper and cut to fit.

Ideology frame backed with Christmas cardstock image (coated with Glossy Accents) and a fancy deer head 3-D resin sticker by Little B - LOVE these - I also used an evergreen tree by them in one of the winter scenes - can you spot it? I glittered a tiny bottle brush tree, then encasing in in a corked dome. Boxwood twine, paper flowers and pinecone charms finish it off.

This is my favorite vignette and it was also the most fiddly. There is a vintage glass ornament hanging in the back.  A glittered bottle brush tree makes another appearance. This time it's a bit bigger and rests in an antique candle holder. Before electric light bulbs people clipped these onto trees to light them, unfortunately too often with disastrous results.  The little girl in the back is a Frozen Charlotte. I just couldn't put her in there naked! So I made her a dress using Christmas patterned cardstock, pleating and fitting the skirt to her waist and trimming out the bottom with a bit of lace. I'm still on the hunt for a mini Nutcracker to add as she reminds me of Clara with her pretty little dress!

The finished back showing how I used the wood planking paper to cover the roof. Almost looks real! Before I started applying all the papers I painted the structure with Golden's Regular Body Iridescent Bronze Acrylic Paint. To eliminate the white edges of the cut paper pieces I edged all my papers with Distress Ink before I glued them in place.

Another year done. Another book complete! I love being challenged every month to try new techniques or revisit older ones. With the house buying and selling thing going on MUCH longer than anticipated (or desired!) it's been difficult, at times, to find my creative muse. Tim Holtz always manages to help pull me out of any funk I might be in and for that I am grateful. I've always said that creating is my therapy and over the course of the last year and a half truer words could not have been spoken. I sure hope he continues with his monthly challenges into 2017. I have a feeling I'm gonna need the distraction!

The extra challenge for me is that because I am doing book pages I have to make the front and the back of the page, and I have to be careful about bulk and where it is placed if I include highly dimensional elements. On his tag he used the jingle bell brads - which I love - but just created way to much bulk at the bound edge of the page. I ended up punching 3 'berries' from red cardstock at coating them with Glossy Accents.

I LOVE the tile he did with the wishbone and word 'Wish' so I repeated it on my page. A wishbone on Christmas themed art? Who would have thunk it! LOVE IT! I don't own any Shadow Press debossers so I just used thin dies to make my Merry Christmas tile, backing it with his metallic gold cardstock. From there I just created my own tiles with what I had on hand.

For the back of the page I die cut the Mini Reindeer and 25 from chipboard and painted them with Iridescent Bronze paint (Golden) and used the metallic rub-ons on black cardstock. Then I die cut it out with one of his thin label dies, edging it with the bronze paint. It's good that it's kind of big because it hides my goof (for the most part) when I was spraying the burlap background. I finished it with a strip of patterned cardstock to frame & ground the saying 'Peace On Earth'.

Got My Mojo Back!

The Last Magical Friend

With the month of December comes the last Magical Friend to complete my Magical Friends artist book. I had a lot of fun letting my mind run wild and creating fantastical friends, then getting to share them with my real-life friends in our local, little mixed media group; Mixed Media Mavens. And thank you to my dear friend Lesley Blais for suggesting this project.

Without further delay, meet: Noelle:

She works in Santa's workshop at the North Pole, helping Santa read & organize ALL the letters he gets and also helps him to grant wishes. Guess you could say she is his right hand elf!

For the background I used a combination of Basic Grey papers & stickers and K& Co borders. The Santa over city image is by Magenta. Noelle and her dress are from Character Constructions  - one of my all time favorite stamp companies. The window frame is Gold Dresden that I rubbed with black paint to knock down the brightness and bring out the embossed details. I finished the page and the tag with rhinestone stars and red crystals.

For her story tag I colored one side with Tim Holtz distress inks using his wrinkle free distress technique. The other side is more Basic Grey papers & stickers and K & Co border.

I cut small bits of paper and wrote 'Dear Santa', edged them with red ink and inserted them into the envelopes.

 

A Little More Christmas Crafting Fun!

On my vacation last week I managed to get some play time in the studio.  I made 10 ornaments using mini tart tins, an antique tart mold and some small Brioche molds.  They were so much fun to make! I abandoned the six mini tart tin ones and gave a couple of the bigger ones as gifts. The images are all from the November LAC swap kit, A Vintage Christmas. Of course there is LOTS of glitter - what's Christmas crafting without it!? Behind all the Altered Brioche Pans I die cut the snowflake with the Tim Holtz Layered Snowflake die/embossing folder set. I just covered grunge board with sheets of silver foil before die cutting and embossing.

12 Tags of 2015 ~ December

Wow! Two posts in one day! In between puttering around the house on my day off from work I managed to get my tag pages done for Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of 2015 monthly challenge.  I didn't have everything he used, and I had to make pages to compliment the tag but I had some pretty good substitutes. For the tag background I do have the Flourish stencil but I chose to use the Festive stencil instead as it compliments the paper I chose to back my tag (it is removable) much better. I did buy the punches ( I had one and bought the other two for this project). I really like them, they punch really well and I figured I would get a lot of use out of them. The Pine and Juniper ones would make awesome sea coral don't you think?

A Bit Of Christmas Craft

I don't know what it is about Christmas that makes my crafty self go into overdrive.  Maybe because as a kid I remember crafting ornaments and other treasures at the kitchen table with my mom and brother. All those sequins! All that paint and felt! Oh my! 

Those of you who have been following me know that I am selling my house so I haven't been able to really craft and create as I would like. But now that the holidays are here and no more open houses planned for the foreseeable future and I doubt anyone will be house shopping over the next few weeks at least, I feel like I have my home 'back' and have gotten busy with lots of Christmas arts & crafts! This is the upside of not selling my house yet! Fun in the Lightfoot house!

  My Christmas cards this year are almost entirely made up of Tim Holtz and Ranger Inc products. All the stamps, dies, inks and surfaces except the silver paint on the snowflake (Viva Decor) and the metallic vinyl snowflake sticker (Stampendous) is made by them. This card really shimmers in real life which unfortunately doesn't show in the pic.

 

Next up is a Christmas Cottage I made using a base kit that I had bought years ago and didn't pack away for some reason when I was decluttering my studio for showings. I used very nontraditional colors. I found the buck in my stash (from Red Lead Paperworks) and glittered up his antlers for a little Christmas bling - cause that's how I roll - LOL! The fence that came with the kit was pretty cheesy so I used a Memory Box die to create a newer, prettier fence.  I added the icicles and snowy effects. I used a stencil on plain cardstock with Archival Ink to create the 'Tiled' roof.  I also replaced the red plastic film that the kit had for the windows (yuck!) with a pretty gold vellum.  Little battery operated tea lights flicker away creating a lovely, warm glow to finish the look.

  Lastly, I saw a wonderful project from Paula Cheney and knew I had to create my own! You can see her blog post here. She has a kit for sale with complete instructions but I had most everything she used so I just winged it. NOTE: I used my paint dauber (Festive Berries) to color the burlap background and it destroyed my sponge top before I even got half way through. Luckily I had some replacement daubers handy so I could finish the job, so you might want to have these replacement tops handy!

I ended up using an 11"x14" frame so I had to make a couple adjustments; adding the Santa strip, Gold German Dresden at the bottom and some glittery, dimensional stars that are actually table confetti that I found at a local home/lifestyle shop years ago. I knew I'd find the perfect project for them eventually! I chose the word JOY as the base for my tree, sponging gold and silver paint on the letters for a distressed, vintage look. I also incorporated a couple antique buttons from my collection.

Got My Mojo Back!

November ATCs

I finished my ATCs for Novembers swap on the 19th a little early. The theme is A Vintage Christmas - from Victorian to Retro.  I love Christmas so these worked up pretty quick for me even though the day I made them it was 80 degrees outside!  With a couple exceptions everything I used was in the Kit.

The group is going to go in a slightly different direction next year.  Still artsy and lots of fun! More will be revealed after the Nov 19th swap so stay tuned!

Had to make myself stop at 11 (only need 9). I could have kept going on and on and on...
