12 Tags of 2012 ~ May

Tim posted the May tag last night so I got right to work this morning.  I had to get a little creative to achieve a similar looking tag but everything worked out smoothly.

I didn't have the exact stamp set that he used but I was able to make what I did have work.  In place of the Cash Key I used a Brass rope edged bezel charm that I sold in my Etsy Shop.  I just dipped it in a patina solution to darken/antique it.  I also didn't have the Crowded Attic paper stack, however I did have the stickers so I just used a sticker in the bezel and sealed it with Glossy Accents.  A couple other things I did a little different are; I added the antique MOP button to the ribbon and I stitched my tape measure ribbon with red thread instead of white to balance the red stamped image near the top of the tag.

Now the wooden spool he used just wasn't gonna happen.  I'm not proficient enough to use a belt sander to flatten out the spool.  I want to keep all 10 of my fingers thank you very much!

I used Mold n Pour to make a mold of one of my smaller vintage spools instead.  After I dipped my flowers (Oh I LOVE this technique!) I let the Clear UTEE get good and golden amber then poured it into the mold.  Once it set I popped it out of the mold and cut a V shaped divot in the back while it was still warm so that the flowers and spool would be flush on the back.  The mold and the UTEE really picked up the woodgrain of the spool - so cool! 

My flowers are so much bigger than the ones Tim used so I just used 3 of them adding a leaf spray behind them.  Also, instead of the tiny safety pin he used on the spool I used a tiny heart charm - just because - VBG!

12 Tags of 2012 ~ April

 

I finally got around to making my tag for April!  I like the mottled ink technique we used on this tag.  A much softer look that Spritz & Flick.  This month I had pretty much everything he used except the Brushed Corduroy EP (I used Timber from Powder Keg) and the key.  I used a real antique key instead.  My aunt had given me tons of old keys a while back and I love using them here & there.

Wow!

What a response my tags have created over the last couple of weeks!  I have had so my comments and emails I can't respond to them individually like I normally would.  So here is my collective THANK YOU SO MUCH! for taking the time to visit my blog.  Your support & encouragement mean everything to me.

Creative Chemistry 101 Day 10

Nothing like a little insomnia to get you ahead of the game.  Tim posted the last technique around 11:30-ish so I figured what the heck I might as well make my tag now.  I'm very sad it is the last day of class (techniques - Monday is the show and tell and wrap up).

Got to play with one of my favorite Distress products - Rock Candy Distress Stickles.  Unfortunately it doesn't photograph very well at all.  Trust me, it's very sparkley - like a coating of clear, chunky baker's glitter - over the entire tag.  Makes me want to bake some sugar cookies next!

Day 10

A Little Easter Goodness

Tim posted a little Fuzzy Easter Project on his blog (last week I think).  Well, except for the Kraft Tag, papers and the inks I had nothing so I improvised.  First I only had the larger Easter die so I decided to make mine on the larger #8 tag (he used #5 tag).  Next I didn't have brown felt - but I had a sheet of a flannel type charcoal so I used it and decided he needed a fuzzy tail so I added some white Sparkle Fluff ( a kind of flocking) on his tail.  I also didn't have the new Spring Embossing Folder Set so I used other EFs that I thought would work.  For the grass (he used an embossing folder) I made grass using green crepe paper and my nifty herb cutting scissors I got at Crate & Barrel ages ago (Martha Stewart now sells the same scissors for crafting and calls them Fringe Scissors - great minds think alike! LOL!)  I actually like my grass better - sorry Tim!  Oh, and I added a little bling to the ribbon - gotta have bling!

The smaller tag is an extra tag from todays lesson using Perfect Pearls and the scrap paper I used to shim the felt when I die cut the bunny.  The paper was a resist patterned paper that I stained with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.  I added more crepe paper grass, rhinestones, glitter letters (I stained them  purple with a Pantone marker) and a vintage millinery flower.

Creative Chemistry 101 Days 9

This class is almost over - I can't believe it.  Time flies when you're having fun right?  Today we experimented with Perfect Pearls and I honestly can't pick a favorite.  I loved each one!  I even made up a couple extra tags using the leftover ink & PP on my craft sheet.  One is done - the other is drying. 

I also have included the extra tag using Rock Candy Crackle Paint from Day 8.  Because of the rain yesterday it took overnight to dry.  I used the 'frame' left behind when I diecut the manniquin.   Then I painted it with Gold Adirondack Paint Dauber & stamped it using Archival Ink.  I then backed the hole with a sticker from the Crowded Attic sticker book, attached the whole thing to an extra tag I made with leftover ink and using a finer paint brush filled in the space with Clear Rock Candy Crackle.  Quick & simply really - except for the dry time.

Creative Chemistry 101 Days 7 & 8

Phew!  I am completely caught up now.  I even made a couple extra tags just to see what would happen if......

I couldn't wait to experiment with Day 7's techniques.  I own several Distress embossing powders and had never been able to make them work - so they sat in a drawer....and sat....and sat.  And now I know why!!!  They seem to work best with the Distress Embossing Ink.  My Versamark pad is to sticky to make them work like they are supposed to.  That tag is on the right.  The Rusted Enamel technique is my favorite!  Really looks like old metal with a lovely patina.  That one is in the middle.  The Batik technique (tag on the left) is an oldy but goody for me, though for some reason I had a difficult time getting the EP to stick to the ink - that's never happened before.

Day 7

 

Today (Day 8) we played with paints.  One of the techniques (Shattered Stains - tag on the right) was covered during the 12 Tags of Christmas and I had a devil of a time with it then.  Actually watching him do the technique on video really helped A LOT.  I've almost got it mastered!  It might have been because it was raining and humid here today but my dress form dried funny.  It crackled beautifully except for the center of her chest.  It took forever to dry but it finally did - 8 hours later.  The center of her chest crackled - just not all the way down to the Grungeboard - weird huh?  He also demoed a paint resist on Sticky Back Canvas.  He used Natural for the technique so I was curious what (if any) difference there would be if I used the White (Gessoed) SBC.  So I used the same color stains on both samples.  As you can see the differences are quite dramatic.  The Natural SBC has a much rougher quality to it - even the stamp image looks more faded.  

The tag on the left uses Distress Crackle Paint.  Oh, boy the drama!  All my paints were anywhere from drying but salvageable to completely dried up and crackled in the pot.  I was able to restore all of them but 4.  I have contacted Ranger to see if there is anything they can do.  A few of the pots still had the factory seal on them.  I let you know what happens.  I really like the effect I got on the tag and will use this technique again.

Creative Chemistry 101 Days 4-6

I was able to catch up on Monday but I was unable to get online until tonight.  I throughly enjoyed Day 4 - all about Reinkers.  Painting with them, spraying with them, making custom stamps with them - ohhh - yummy!

I used Lost Coast, Hero & Memory Box stamps to create the painted tag.  The middle tag is spritzed using Crafter's Workshop stencil and Red Lead Paperworks stamp - isn't she adorable?!  With the custom stamp pad tag on the right I kinda cheated - but it does prove something.  I made this custom stamp for the 12 Tags Of Christmas in Dec 2011.  It still stamps beautifully!  The pad is still quite juicy!  I just stored it in a small ziploc bag.

Day 4

 

Day 5 wasn't so easy for me.  It was all about Distress Stains.  I ended up doing 2 out of 3 tags twice.  I seem to have a hard time getting the stains to flow properly.  I find I really had to press down on the dauber top to get the stains to flow. This ends up trashing and pilling the tags and any other paper I tried.  I ended up with bits of the paper on the dauber top and in the stains on the tag.  I did pick out the 1st marble stains tag out of the trash and kinda did my own thing which ended up being a combination of two of the days techniques - and I liked how it came out so I stamped it, added a Poe quote and made an ATC out of it.  If you have read down this far, you deserve a prize!  Leave a comment on this post and I will choose someone at random to win the ATC.  I will draw the winner on Sunday, April 1st (and no this is NOT an April Fools joke).

Day 5

 

Day 6 I FINALLY got to play with my Distress Markers.  I LOVE them!  To the point that I am getting rid of all my other water based markers (I really didn't like them anyway).  They blend BEAUTIFULLY and with little effort.  So easy to work with though my favorite way to use them is with the water brushes.  I felt I had the most control.  Oh, and I loved the ombre effect I can do with them using 2 completely different colors and not ruin the tip.

Today I used A Stamp In The Hand stamps for all my tags.

Creative Chemistry 101

I signed up for my very first online class and it just happens to be with Tim Holtz.  I'm having lots of fun trying out new and old techniques - many with a TH twist.  When I teach at Beautiful Impressions many of my students ask how and why questions, especially when  comes to Distress products - which I use regularly and the ink is my 'go to' dye ink.  I love their properties  (they are different from the classic dye ink) because it makes them so versatile.

My MIL visited from Indiana last week, so while I was able to keep up with viewing the videos, I wasn't able to squeeze in any creative time in the studio.  On Saturday I finally got to play a little and was able to do 2 days worth of tags.  I hope to be completely caught up by the end of today.  :0)

I decided to work on the smaller #5 tag instead of the #8 and keep the tags as simple as possible keeping the focus on the technique used on each tag.  So none of the pretty baubles, lace or 3-D embellies that I tend to use - which is a challenge in itself.  LOL!

March Tag

I'm right on top of things this month!  Plus it was an easy tag with a technique I am familiar with - but of course Tim had to put him own spin on it - VBG!

I had to make a few substitutions because the only things he used that I had were the inks, PP Spray, paper stash, grungeboard and the metal Foliage at the bottom of the tag.

I used the Butterflight On The Edge die and cut out TINY bits of paper to create the mosiac.  Since I didn't have Cement EP I used Antique Lead EP from Judikins.  I used a disposable foam eyeshadow applicator to ink the edges of the diecut - even in all those tiny nooks and crannies! 

Using a manila tag I traced it on kraft cardstock then cut it out.  The tree stamp is Impression Obsession (one of their cover a card stamps).

I stamped one of his quotes directly on the tag but it didn't show up enough for my liking so I die cut a Journaling tag, inked/distressed it and stamped the quote on the tag, then glued it in place over the original stamping.

Instead of using plain brads I used glittery ones instead (gotta have the bling!) that are a soft sage green and have a silvery glitter on top.

Below is a close up of the mosiac effect.  The Antique Lead EP looks old and nubby textured - pretty cool!
