My page for this months challenge from Tim Holtz is actually the second one I did. Usually if I don't like something I just keep at it until I do like it - which usually works out and usually these pieces become favorites. Not this time. Short of painting the whole thing over with Gesso it just wasn't workin for me. Not feelin it! It was just a mess! So I removed the quote band and started over with a completely different material. When he did the Textured Surface technique last year it wasn't one of my favorites - but hey - that's why its a "Challenge"! You gotta make it work for you! So instead of rip corrugated cardboard I went with Natural Canvas (sticky back canvas to be exact!). I treated it the same as the cardboard and got a similar effect just not quite as chaotic to the eye. A 'cleaner' distress if you please!
Another thing that I did differently from the first page I made was that I applied and blended one Distress Crayon at a time. When I applied all the colors at once and then blended it all just seemed to turn to mud. When I applied only one color at a time and blended it with my finger it blended beautifully - no mud! Also once I blended out the color it seem to 'fix' it in place as long as I didn't add water.
